West Africa’s Art Season: Must-Attend Events From Senegal to Ghana & Nigeria

By Kwame Mensah

West Africa’s art season has become one of the most anticipated cultural windows on the continent. From late September to mid-December, the region transforms into a vibrant hub of creativity, with art fairs, fashion shows, film festivals, and literary gatherings drawing thousands of artists, curators, and enthusiasts. It is a period defined by exchange, discovery, and the electrifying energy of cultural innovation.

In Nigeria, the season is anchored by ART X Lagos (Nov 6–9), celebrating its 10th anniversary with a landmark exhibition honoring JD Okhai Ojeikere’s photography. Lagos also hosts the 15th Lagos Fashion Week (Oct 29–Nov 2), showcasing designers like Emmy Kasbit and Bubu Ogisi, alongside experimental exhibitions such as Dating in Lagos and Sea Never Dry. The opening of the Museum of West African Art (Nov 11) in Benin City marks a historic milestone, while the Lagos Fringe Festival (Nov 18–23) continues to spotlight independent theatre, film, and music.

Ghana’s cultural calendar features “Memories in Form” (Oct 25–Nov 30), an exhibition by Selorm Amekorfia at WorldFaze Art Practice. His use of fragmented mirrors and sculptural forms explores themes of memory and identity, offering a striking metaphor for repair and transformation.

Senegal’s capital Dakar comes alive with Partcours Art dans la Cité (Nov 28–Dec 14), a citywide art journey that invites audiences to discover diverse cultural spaces. The season also includes Dakar Fashion Week (Dec 3–7), a dazzling showcase of Senegalese style, and Les Deux Exhibition (Dec 4–6) at Galerie36, presenting new works by Ibrahima Ndoye.

Other highlights across the region include Accra Cultural Week (Oct 30–Nov 3), S16 Film Festival in Nigeria (Dec 1–5), and the Lagos Photo Festival (Oct 25), which this year engages with themes of incarceration through photography from across Africa.

West Africa’s art season is more than a calendar of events — it is a testament to the region’s creative resilience and its growing influence on global culture. Each exhibition, performance, and gathering adds to a collective narrative that celebrates heritage while pushing boundaries of contemporary expression.
