Boxing is often described as a lonely sport, but moments of tragedy remind us that even the fiercest rivals share bonds of humanity. This truth was evident when former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder reached out to British-Nigerian star Anthony Joshua following a devastating car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of Joshua’s close friends.
On December 29, 2025, Joshua was traveling in a Lexus SUV along an expressway in Ogun State with his strength coach Sina Ghami and personal trainer Latif “Latz” Ayodele. The vehicle collided with a stationary truck. Joshua survived with injuries, but both Ghami and Ayodele tragically lost their lives.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Wilder urged Joshua “to stay strong,” adding that he was keeping him in his prayers. Wilder’s words carried weight not just as a fellow fighter, but as someone who understands the emotional toll of loss and the resilience required to continue.
Brotherhood Beyond the Ring
Though Wilder and Joshua have long been linked as rivals in the heavyweight division, Wilder’s message underscores the respect that transcends competition. In moments of grief, the boxing fraternity becomes a family—one that rallies around its members when life delivers its hardest punches.
Ovation’s Take
Joshua’s tragedy is a reminder that athletes, despite their strength and fame, are deeply human. Wilder’s encouragement reflects the solidarity of sport: a recognition that resilience is not only about winning fights in the ring, but also about surviving life’s unexpected battles.
